VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES – GALAPAGOS ISLANDS HOUSE OF CULTURE

Volunteer Opportunity

2 Positions:

  • ART VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
  • VOLUNTEER ARTISTS IN ALL AREAS

Project

CASA DE LA CULTURA ECUATORIANA «BENJAMÍN CARRIÓN» – NÚCLEO GALÁPAGOS / CCE-NG (GALAPAGOS HOUSE OF CULTURE) is implementing art workshops for children and youth in the Galapagos islands, Ecuador and is requesting volunteer help.

Project Description:

The House of Culture is committed to bringing the arts to children and youth in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. This organization has a philosophy of «integrated development» in which spiritual and artistic development play an important role in the balance of social, economic and environmental impacts which affect a community.

Several international organizations contribute greatly to environmental conservation in the Galapagos archipelago, but the welfare of the residents living in the Galapagos is underserved. There are many children and young people who do not have the opportunity to find ways to help them grow holistically.

The House of Culture creates art workshops for children, teenagers and young people based on age: from 4-5 years old, 6-7 years old, 8-10 years old, 11 to 14 years old, 15 to 17 years old and 18 years and older. The groups have a maximum of 15 participants. The workshops will have different themes: visual arts, music, theater, and alternative arts. The alternative arts include any activity that stimulates the creativity and imagination of young people, for example the creation of musical instruments from trash, recycled paper-making, creating puppets, cooking, etc. It also includes a component of martial arts, such as Capoeira, aikido, tai chi, tae Kwando and others preferred.

Purpose of the project:

The process of teaching children and youth must have certain basic features which allow a perfect internalization of learning. There needs to be a relationship between three areas for learning to occur: formal education in primary and secondary schools, home activities and art workshops. This relationship allows the child to «keep learning» after school.

This vision of integrated education requires that parents, teachers and art guides (for the purposes of our project), are all part of the teaching-learning process. This relationship also serves as a “double track” for learning because adults also learn from their children. With this method, parents, teachers and guides will be better able to interpret the artistic needs of their children/students and can be better-trained guides for their students.

The project has three main components: visual arts, music and performing arts, and an alternative component, all of which has much in common in a general context, while maintaining their own structure and methodology.
